Who are The Byrne Group?

The Byrne Group works across a multitude of sectors, including commercial, retail, residential, infrastructure, stadia and leisure & hospitality, for public and private clients. Our dedicated teams have had the privilege of working on some of the most iconic projects across London including, The Shard development, London 2012 Olympic Stadium, refurbishment of the Savoy Hotel, Cutty Sark, upgrade of hospitality suites at Twickenham Stadium (RFU), and to the Scalpel.

Patsy and Johnny Byrne founded Byrne Bros in 1969, originally to provide engineering solutions for sub and superstructure packages. The company is now recognised as one of the UK’s premier concrete frame contractors.

Joined by new build, refurbishment and fit-out contractor Ellmer in 1977, affording the Group the opportunity to offer the full spectrum of construction services.

The Group provides the corporate infrastructure, safety management, technology and support services required by individual businesses. Technical expertise contained within the Group is utilised to support each business and assist with the challenging demands of any project. We draw upon technical capability and collaborative working to offer our clients pre-construction services, providing buildability advice and innovative solutions that give our clients greater surety on the delivery of their projects.

What projects / schemes / initiatives to support women’s recruitment, retention and progression in STEM are The Byrne Groupr involved in?

Our graduate, undergraduate and apprenticeship programmes have attracted female candidates over the last 6 years, and we are pleased to have retained many of them, now working in professional roles within the business including engineering, estimating, planning, Health & Safety, and quantity surveying.

We continue to encourage our people to become STEM Ambassadors and to join WISE on an individual basis. With the ongoing support of the Company, we hope that this will strengthen our internal pool of ambassadors that can reach out to schools and colleges to provide insight, encouragement and opportunity in the industry.

As part of our diversity workstream, we were also very pleased to be able to work with the Royal Academy of Engineering on the Inclusive Cultures Project. We were nominated in two categories of the NCE 100 Companies of the Year 2016 and contributed to the “People Like Me in Construction” initiative that was launched in 2017.

We recognise the importance of participating in projects and events hosted by these organisations in order to promote diversity.

The Company is passionate that we, as an industry, should strive to attract a more diverse workforce. Joining the WISE campaign will continue to support our efforts in the area of gender diversity and the need to attract female talent to the industry.

Why did The Byrne Group join WISE?

“Wise membership provides incredible support to Byrne Group’s continued engagement with schools and colleges. It is vital that the younger generations have access to relevant factual information and have the opportunity to gain practical experience to enable them to make informed choices about their future careers.”
