Belcan engineers better outcomes for customers – from jet engines, airframe, and avionics to heavy vehicles, automobiles, and cybersecurity. With over 50 locations across North America, Europe, and India, we work closely with Airbus, where we have been a 1st Tier Engineering supplier to Airbus Wing design centres in Filton and Broughton for over 15 years. Our work with Airbus includes services like aircraft in-service support, repair engineering, and design and analysis of metallic and composite structural components and assemblies. We have industry expertise in aerospace, defence, space, government and automotive. Our engineers engage in full-lifecycle design, wing & high-lift device specialisms, component engineering, systems integration, and MRO (Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul). Overall, in the UK there are approximately 10,000+ employees working for Belcan.
What projects / schemes / initiatives to support women’s recruitment, retention and progression in STEM are Belcan involved in?
Future projects targeted at female engineers include:
Women engineers aiming for chartered engineer status: help and support for their applications: this can be through assigning mentors, STEM activities, leadership responsibilities etc.
Supporting women recruitment: attending career fairs, encouraging young women at school/colleges regarding engineering. Hiring strategies must consider an equal share of women applicants to their counterparts. Providing opportunity is key!
Conferences/seminars across Belcan UK: focusing and celebrating women engineers and their achievements. An award such as ‘Belcan’s Women Engineer of the Year’ can be a great start!
Progression for women engineers within the company: through training, courses, mentorship schemes, leadership roles etc
Why did Belcan join WISE?
‘We joined WISE because we were fascinated by the concept of becoming part of a network that supports and empowers women to break barriers and redefine what is possible in engineering. WISE also provides us with an opportunity to inspire others as we strongly believe that you can’t be what you can’t see.’
