Inspiring futures: how Pfizer is using My Skills My Life to bring STEM careers to life for girls
We recently worked with Pfizer to showcase the exciting opportunities within the pharmaceutical sector by creating a bespoke Pfizer My Skills My Life resource.
The Pfizer resource pack specifically highlights the fantastic women role models covering all aspects of the pharmaceutical industry from laboratory and clinical scientists to marketing and communication specialists.
We caught up with Rachel and Hannah, to find out more about the project and the outreach work Pfizer is doing.
What is a ‘My Skills My Life resource’?
The Pfizer My Skills My Life resource is a bespoke booklet that showcases the fantastic role models working at Pfizer. The resource is designed to empower girls and young women by helping them discover how their unique personalities align with exciting careers within Pfizer.
We have a diverse range of roles and this resource showcases the breadth and depth of what’s available within the pharmaceutical industry to suit a variety of people and their skills.
How will you use the resource?
Our colleagues will be using the resource at events to engage with young people and demonstrate the exciting roles within our organisation with real-life examples of the women already doing it.
Pfizer has been delivering My Skills My Life sessions for a couple of years already, but now with this resource we can personalise the sessions by directly linking to the opportunities we have available such as our apprenticeships, work experience and graduate schemes.
Tell us more about your outreach work and how you plan on using the resource in the future?
Over the years we’ve built up good relationships with local schools through events such as the annual Science Jamboree organised by The STEM Hub. These are great opportunities to engage with a variety of students and teachers from schools across East Kent.
We try to be proactive in our approach by reaching out to schools, making a conscious effort to reach schools who don’t have as much science funding or links into the STEM industry.
We also reach out to schools that our staff have children at to utilise our internal connections and existing relationships within education.
We’re looking forward to attending an Employment and Apprenticeships Fair at a Sixth Form college in July and recently worked with an academy in Canterbury and an all-girls school in South London where we received great feedback from one of the students:
‘I really enjoyed the session as it gave me a different outlook onto getting into the working environment. Each of their journeys were different, but they still succeeded in landing successful jobs. This serves as an inspiration as it shows that even if you lose your way, you are never too far gone, and there are still opportunities available.’ Year 10 student at Le Retraite Girls school in South London
What is My Skills My Life?
My Skills My Life is an outreach tool that uses women role models to showcase the exciting career opportunities within science, engineering, technology and maths (STEM) to inspire young people, in particular girls, to pursue a career in STEM.
It uses a personality quiz to match young people with relevant STEM jobs based on their key skills and preferences. Unlike traditional career guides, this resource helps girls connect with real people in STEM, making career paths feel more relatable and achievable.
Whether you are a company looking for support with your outreach programmes, a woman in STEM who can inspire the next generation, a teacher looking for careers resources or someone looking for career advice and inspiration yourself, My Skills My Life can help you.
