Since the project launched in January 2018, WISE have engaged with over 250 girls across Thurrock, raising aspirations and opening eyes to the number of careers in STEM available.
“The session helped me understand more about STEM & the uses of it. No job is just for boys. I can achieve the things I want if I work hard.” 13 year old pupil, Gable Hall School.
“It explained a lot about how to be open minded and that there are many jobs out there. To never give up and to look at alternate options.” 13 year old pupil, Gable Hall School.
There is a very low uptake of STEM subjects for girls post-16 within the Thurrock area. WISE have partnered with the University of East London to deliver a unique, collaborative project to promote STEM subjects to 11-16 year olds across Thurrock.
We launched this project with an event back in January 2018. Since then, we have developed a regional toolkit based on our ‘People Like Me’ resource. This features specific guidance for pupils within the Thurrock area, highlighting local opportunities available. We contacted over 60 different local employer organisations to ask for their involvement and from these, recruited 12 local female role models to feature in the pack.
We held a number of ‘People Like Me’ training sessions within Thurrock at Porsche Centre (South London), Mercedez-Benz (Lakeside) and the local careers hub. These were attended by local STEM ambassadors, teachers and careers advisors. The training allows them to run ‘People Like Me’ sessions in the local area themselves.
“The delivery was such that I was confident enough to be able to deliver such training in a school.” WISE Role Model.
We are holding a My Skills My Life session at UEL Campus, Stratford, on 3rd July. We are looking for role models keen to take part in this event. If you’re interested, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
