For the first time ever, there are more than 1 million women working in core STEM roles across the UK. At WISE, we celebrated this achievement launching 1 of The Million, a nation-wide campaign that aimed to showcase the stories, strength, brilliance and diversity of women working in STEM.
Thanks to the support of our sponsors (Lloyds Banking Group, RAF Engineering, AWE and Bam Nuttall), the campaign engaged women across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Campaign initiatives, such as our social media days, even went international. We are thrilled with the support 1 of The Million has received, including from individual women in STEM, organisations within the STEM sector, and from WISE’s patron, HRH The Princess Royal, who attended the event which launched our 1 of The Million celebration video.
We launched this campaign with the goal of putting a face to the million. You can’t be what you can’t see, and 1 of The Million aimed to increase the visibility of women from all backgrounds working in all levels and roles within STEM. We know that diverse teams are better teams and that our societies are strengthened when they are shaped by, and designed for the many, instead of the few. By increasing the visibility of diverse role models, the campaign sought to reflect the changing face of STEM and to inspire more women and girls to see themselves in STEM, too. After its year-long run, we are proud of the reach, stories and visibility that 1 of The Million has achieved.
