Your organisation must be open and inclusive
If women are to get the same career chances as men, they have to know what’s on offer and feel confident about putting themselves forward. That may not happen if opportunities are promoted solely through traditional networks. Your organisation must be open and inclusive so that everyone knows what’s available and has the support necessary to plan and advance their careers.
What you should do
- Push for full transparency about development opportunities, attractive projects and stretch assignments. This could mean setting out all information about career paths and vacancies on the company intranet.
- Encourage women and others from under-represented groups to put themselves forward for these opportunities. Career progression should be an integral part of performance review discussions for all employees.
- Ensure that awareness of opportunities is not restricted to an ‘in-group’, thereby excluding those who are not part of the group or do not invest time in networking. Go beyond the statutory requirements
