What’s needed is a more creative and open-minded approach
Doing things the way they’ve always been done won’t bring in fresh talent. What’s needed is a more creative and open-minded approach to recruitment – thinking differently about the way STEM roles are both designed and advertised, so as to attract a wider talent pool and find the best person for the job.
What you should do
- Challenge fixed ideas about the kind of person needed for a particular job and the way in which it should be done. Recognise that a different approach or style might be highly effective.
- Acknowledge that relying on precedent can inadvertently deter people who do not fit a traditional profile from applying or being considered for a role.
- Review the content, language and tone of job adverts to avoid messages that may be off-putting to women. This may require specialist help.
