SENIOR ENGINEER AT ATKINS

How I came to STEM

Since a very young age, I have had a passion for Mathematics and have had a flair for the subject. I enjoyed the application of Mathematics and solving problems that initially seemed impossible, which motivated me to derive solutions. Mathematics is very broad and the logical aspect together with the creative freedom to derive solutions in multiple ways led me to pursue Mathematics at a higher level.

I studied an integrated Masters (MSci) Mathematics degree at the University of Birmingham. During my degree, I thoroughly enjoyed mechanics and from my second year onwards I began specialising in Applied Mathematics. Furthermore, my research project was inspired by my love of aeroplanes, and I focused on the mathematical equations and principles that make flight possible.

Following completion of my degree, I applied my passion and extensive knowledge in Mathematics to the field of Engineering and started my career in the Aerospace and Defence sector; where I combined my academic learnings to solve complex technical problems to help engineer a better world.

From my experience, Mathematics is pivotal to many STEM subjects and the real-world applications of Mathematics are endless. I am very fortunate to have supportive parents that helped me pursue my passion.

Why I love what I do

I love working in the field of Engineering as it provides the perfect platform for me to work on exciting and varied multi-sector projects, working front-line with clients, using my own initiative as well as working with an incredibly diverse team to design and deliver complex engineering solutions. No two days are the same and as well as having autonomy there are plenty of opportunities to learn from each other. I enjoy working in a very supportive and positive environment. Having progressed through my career, currently in the Transportation sector I love working as part of a team that has a great focus on delivering projects that will impact the future of travel.

I am open-minded and curious to learn new and different ways of working and sharing cross-sector knowledge. As such, I have worked on a diverse range of projects including, the application of mathematical analysis techniques to assess material damage and also improve helicopter survivability. Furthermore, I have worked as an integral part of the Design Systems Team and derived control system logic for nuclear applications. Having the opportunity to contribute my unique skillset, working collaboratively with other team members creates a real buzz. Then seeing the impact of this work and application to real life Engineering further motivates me.

What I’m proud of and what I’m hoping to achieve through the WYPB

Utilising my strong technical engineering, applied mathematics, and business analysis skills together with working front line in successfully delivering projects sets me aside from other individuals. My unique skillset has enabled me to work across different sectors, thus creating a greater impact on projects and being successful for project bids. I am proud of being awarded the Atkins UK & Europe Young Professional of the Year award, achieving top place from applications globally across the field of engineering and project management.

I am passionate about creating positive cultural change in STEM and working collaboratively with like-minded individuals with the energy, drive, and personal commitment to make meaningful changes in advancing women in STEM. I believe the WYPB is a unique opportunity to share best practices from across the different organisations; to learn new and innovative ways of working and apply the learning back into the main WISE board and employer organisations. This will help inform strategic priorities, deliver innovative solutions, and drive equality in STEM.

I will bring my diverse experience to the WYPB to positively address stereotypes within STEM and champion diversity of thought. As a member of the board, I hope to inspire & engage women and young people to pursue STEM careers and be a visible role model for gender equality in STEM. I am fortunate to also be part of an organisation that supports me in doing this.
