Women are significantly under-represented in digital technology roles (making up just 18% according to the most recent Office of National Statistics (ONS) data). Such roles are increasingly vital to the future of the UK’s digital economy. WISE’s research: Exploring Pathways into Tech Careers aims to identify new routes into digital roles and provide recommendations for employers looking to recruit and retain more diverse talent with a focus on training, up-skilling and retraining.
Following a survey of 646, and extended interviews with 28 people currently in, or looking to move into tech roles, the report identifies alternative backgrounds, useful transferable attributes, and skills gaps lacking in the current digital workforce.
Our research found that younger women are increasingly choosing to start their career as digital specialists, but overall women continue to be more likely to retrain into the tech workforce than choose it as a career at the outset.
