Girls are you IN or OUT?
13 October 2016
Leeds City Council’s Outer South Community Committee and WISE are working with NG Bailey to run an inspirational event in Leeds to encourage young women (age 13-18) into science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) careers in the region.
Female students can sign up for the event at Rodillian Academy, which takes place on Thursday 17 November from 5.15pm – 8.00pm. The event is targeted at young women living in the outer south of Leeds including Rothwell, Morley, Ardsley and Robin Hood.
The format of the interactive self-discovery workshop is based on WISE’s ‘People Like Me’ research. The girls will have chance to meet successful role models from NG Bailey, Northern Power and Siemens; women just like themselves, who will show the girls careers that will use their individual personalities, skills and talents to make a positive difference to their communities and environment.
The event isn’t just for young women - their mums and teachers are also invited to attend to see the wide range of exciting and rewarding careers that are achievable through studying STEM subjects. The variety of routes open includes Higher Education, and Technical Apprenticeships.
Councillor Neil Dawson, champion for employment and skills, said:
" I work for an engineering based company and can see that despite changes over the years the industry is still very male orientated especially compared with similar companies in Europe. The aim of this event is to inspire young women from an early age to consider working in a science and engineering organisation and this event will allow young women to meet with role models who can show engineering as an exciting and fulfilling career"
David Hurcomb, chief executive NG Bailey, added: “Engineering is a fascinating, inspirational career path to follow, with a diverse range of work opportunities. At NG Bailey, we believe that all companies have a role to play in inspiring the next generation, particular girls, into the workforce so we are proud to sponsor this event with Leeds Council and WISE.”
The mum of a daughter who attended a previous WISE event added: ‘Before the session I didn’t have a lot of ideas beyond very traditional roles such as doctor’
