Who are University of Reading?
The University of Reading celebrated the 90th anniversary of its Royal Charter in 2016 and is ranked in the top 1% of universities worldwide (QS University World Rankings 2016/17), with a world-class reputation for the quality of our teaching, research and links to business. The distinct research approach crosses traditional boundaries, and enables us to grow innovation and deliver both impactful and curiosity-driven research. It enables our academics to address those global challenges facing society, business and the environment that require knowledge and skills from across the Arts, Humanities, Social, Physical and Natural Sciences to be drawn together.
We have a global presence – with our Whiteknights and London Road campuses in Reading, Henley Business School at our Greenlands campus in Henley-upon-Thames, and in Johannesburg, and our newest campus in Iskandar, Malaysia. Over 17,000 students and over 4,000 staff, from across the world, study and work at these campuses.
The University employs over 4,000 staff, in wide range of roles and from diverse backgrounds as part of a thriving community in which colleagues are ambitious for themselves, others and the University. The University has a large number of academic and related roles undertaking research and teaching & learning as well as over 2500 jobs in professional service functions; including technical specialists working across science and arts, professional and administrative roles in Finance, HR, IT, Procurement, Marketing, Student Support, the Library and Museums as well as a large number of roles in Estates and Facilities such as cleaning, catering, security, grounds and portering.
What projects / schemes / initiatives to support women’s recruitment, retention and progression in STEM are University of Reading involved in?
The past year has seen an increasing focus for the University on Diversity & Inclusion activities and progress. This has been across a range of areas but with a particular focus on gender and sexual orientation to successfully obtain the Athena Swan Charter Mark at Bronze level and the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index for which the University is ranked 168th out of 440 institutions.
Across our STEM schools, a quarter of our professors are now women which is at least 5.8% better than the averages for the sector and other groups. More information about our progress can be found in our annual Diversity and Inclusion report. Currently the University is working on the projects to ensure the delivery of its Athena Swan action plan including the implementation of funding for parental leave, reviewing recent changes made to the academic promotions process, diversifying University Executive Board and other University Committees and planning a large body of work around reducing the gender pay gap.
We are also committed to updating our recruitment guidelines, advertising through campaigns such as WISE, moving forward with anonymous shortlisting and linking job adverts to flexible working websites. Part of this work is to launch a set of “Faces of Reading” profiles to promote the different working lives and arrangements of staff from a diverse range of role and backgrounds and support our recruitment and retention plans.
