Who are Tessella Ltd?
Tessella is the Analytics World Class Center of the Altran Group. We are innovative scientists and engineers who enjoy solving the real-world technical challenges faced by industry-leading companies at the forefront of science and technology. Using a combination of deep domain knowledge and technical expertise, we work with our clients to find new ways to unlock the value held within their data, enabling them to make better-informed business decisions.
Our work is at the cutting-edge of high-tech R&D and our projects are varied and rewarding. For example, in pharmaceutical companies we solve computational problems for chemists at the early stages of drug discovery and development, ultimately getting drugs to market faster. We help consumer goods companies model and simulate new product ideas. We also support oil and gas engineers with the computational challenges of exploration and production, from reservoir modelling to writing control systems. In space and defence, we have written algorithms and solved complex mathematical problems to control satellites and radar systems.
We offer excellent future prospects and take personal development seriously. All staff receive an annual training allowance of 20 days, which can be used to learn new technical and soft skills, often leading to recognised professional qualifications. We are proud of our culture, where a positive attitude, supportive colleagues and commitment to continuous learning are all valued. The wellbeing and engagement of all staff is our priority and we work in a collaborative, cooperative environment with a good work-life balance.
What projects / schemes / initiatives to support women’s recruitment, retention and progression in STEM are Tessella Ltd involved in?
We are continuously looking for ways to improve the gender balance within our company. From analysis we have undertaken, we are reassured that no gender bias is evident in terms of career progression or retention within Tessella, so our main activities are focused on improving our ability to recruit more women into our business.
Recent initiatives to support this included a review of our recruitment literature and advertising to ensure we are maximising the potential number of female applicants to our vacancies. This included attention to the content, language and images that are used. Our new recruitment brochure includes, amongst other things, more information about our culture, benefits and sports and social club, and our recruitment adverts are written with “gender neutral” language in mind.
We have also revised our family friendly policies, such as flexible working and parental leave, and created a more structured re-introduction programme for staff returning from periods of family related leave.
We are proactively seeking out academic groups and university events with a focus on improving diversity in STEM subjects and we have already identified a few relevant activities to get involved with. We will be sponsoring the OxFEST (Oxford Females in Engineering, Science and Technology) society at the University of Oxford in 2017/18 and participating in their events. We are also sponsoring a female development programme at the University of Warwick.
We are pleased to have joined the WISE campaign and look forward to increasing our talent pool of women.
Why did Tessella Ltd join WISE?
“We are committed to improving diversity within our company and we hope that by joining WISE, we will be able to increase our talent pool of women by working with like-minded companies who share the same vision.”
