The Company has an extensive in-house capability in terms of expertise, such as our extensive engineering and our own specialist plant and equipment. Our capability, covering private and public sectors, ranges from precast and top-down construction to jump-form and slip-form shuttering systems, post-tensioning to high-rise towers and their associated formwork, hoist systems, screening and vertical logistics.
Providing opportunities for the development of our workforce is important, and we take pride in the significant investment in our people for education and training that we make each year. We train and nurture the future talent of our industry, through our Graduate, Placement and Apprenticeship Schemes.
What projects / schemes / initiatives to support women’s recruitment, retention and progression in STEM are Byrne Bros (Formwork) Ltd involved in?
Our graduate, undergraduate and apprenticeship programmes have attracted female candidates over the last 4 years, and we are pleased to have retained many of them, now working in professional roles within the business including engineering, estimating, planning, and quantity surveying.
We are encouraging our people to become STEM Ambassadors and also to join WISE on an individual basis. With the ongoing support of the Company, we hope that this will strengthen our internal pool of ambassadors that can reach out to schools and colleges to provide insight, encouragement and opportunity in engineering.
As part of our diversity workstream we are also very pleased to be working with the Royal Academy of Engineering on the Inclusive Cultures Project. We were nominated in two categories of the NCE 100 Companies of the Year 2016: ‘Diversity Champion’ and ‘Companies to Watch’ and achieved a “Highly Commended” status as well as being placed at position 39. We support “Women Into Construction” and recognise the importance of participating in projects and events hosted by these organisations in order to promote diversity.
The Company is passionate that we, as an industry, should strive to attract a more diverse workforce. Joining the WISE campaign will support our efforts in the area of gender diversity and the need to attract female talent to the industry. This is one of the main reasons for supporting the “People Like Me in Construction” initiative which will be launched later this year.
Why did Byrne Bros (Formwork) Ltd join WISE?
Joining the Wise Campaign will provide additional support for the work that we want to continue to deliver to schools and colleges. It is important that the younger generation have relevant factual information and the opportunity of experience, to allow them to make an informed choice about their future career in engineering.
