British Sugar

Who are British Sugar?

British Sugar is the sole processor of the UK’s beet sugar crop, working in partnership with over 3,000 growers to deliver a world-class product that is made to the highest standards every day. We are the leading producer of sugar for the British and Irish food and beverage markets, processing around eight million tonnes of sugar beet and producing up to 1.4 million tonnes of sugar each year. Our innovative approach to manufacturing across our four factories (at Newark, Bury St Edmunds, Wissington, and Cantley) also enables us to create a range of co-products from power generation and bioethanol, to animal feed and much more.

What projects / schemes / initiatives to support women’s recruitment, retention and progression in STEM are British Sugar involved in?

British Sugar provides graduate and apprentice schemes across engineering, science and business. We have sought to improve the gender split across these programmes over the last 18 months, utilising the WISE job description decoder to ensure all our job descriptions utilise neutral language and ensuring female role models are part of every assessment process.

We actively promote STEM subjects and careers in our local communities by participating in events with schools, career and STEM festivals as well as providing open days for teachers to help people understand what opportunities are available within British Sugar.

Also, we have the opportunity to participate in a number of initiatives through our parent company Associated British Foods. The Women in ABF community has been running for a number of years with the purpose of inspiring female employees and developing their network across the Group. There is the chance to join the Two-Way Mentoring programme, which is designed to help support the development of women both in their current role and towards future career goals.
