3M is a global science-based technology company, developing products that improve people’s daily lives in a multitude of ways.
3M’s science can be found everywhere. It’s changing how industry works by contributing to power and electronics, and protecting people, environments and information – helping to make our world safer, more efficient and more productive.
Our unique culture is founded on curiosity, problem-solving and collaboration.
3M employees have the freedom to explore and the opportunity to connect ideas and technologies in unexpected ways. Through collaboration across businesses, geographies and scientific disciplines, we have the capability to apply science from one area to advance another.
Every day we work closely with our customers to understand their issues and apply our science to help them to succeed, sometimes going beyond the obvious to solve problems that they weren’t even aware they had.
We are constantly seeking innovative ways to create a more sustainable future by designing products that support our customers’ sustainability efforts, embedding sustainable practices across our supply chain and supporting the communities in which we live.
We invest heavily in research and development. Around one third of our sales come from products that didn’t exist five years ago, stretching towards our vision of advancing every company, enhancing every home and improving every life.
We’re committed to doing business the right way and proud of our reputation for integrity.
We are regularly included on lists of the world’s most admired, most respected and most ethical companies.
3M’s community programme has a particular focus on encouraging females to study STEM subjects with the aim of developing a diverse talent pool.
We have more than 100 STEM Ambassadors and employees qualified to host tours and careers events at our centres of technology and manufacturing sites in the UK.
3M is a proud sponsor of British Science Week. As part of the celebrations we host an after-school event for girls (aged 11-13) and their parents/guardians, aimed at influencing subject choices by showcasing the dynamic and fulfilling careers enjoyed by our female scientists and engineers.
Our annual schools competition, 3M Young Innovators Challenge, inspires an interest in science and engineering at an early age through a series of practical, theoretical and creative challenges for primary and secondary students. In 2019 more than 820 reached the judging stages, almost half (49 per cent) were girls.
3M is a sponsor of the Science and Engineering category of the Rising Star Awards, a national programme run by WeAreTheCity, a forum championing female career progression. Our sponsorship helps to shine a spotlight on role models to promote career interest and advancement of female scientists and engineers.
Our Diversity and Inclusion programme is company supported but employee-led, and our Women’s Leadership Forum aims to attract and develop female leaders at every level of the organisation through mentoring, leadership development, peer-to-peer networking, motivational coaching and workplace flexibility programmes.
“As a company, 3M believes that diversity is an essential element of our unique culture of creativity, collaboration and innovation.
We have long shared WISE’s aim to encourage girls and young women to study STEM subjects, so we’re pleased that we can show our support through this membership.”
