It comprises Airbus as a leading global manufacturer of highly innovative commercial aircraft, Airbus Defence and Space as the defence and space leader in Europe, providing tanker, combat, transport and mission aircraft as well as space systems, equipment and services, and Airbus Helicopters which offers the world’s widest range of civil and military helicopters. Airbus Group is a major partner in the Eurofighter consortium, a stakeholder in the missile systems provider MBDA and a 50% partner in turboprop aircraft maker ATR.

Airbus Group strives to expand its key programmes to support further profitable growth. To gain access to new markets and resources, the Group is expanding its international footprint but remains strongly committed to its home countries within Europe.

What projects / schemes / initiatives to support women's recruitment, retention and progression in STEM are Airbus Group involved in?

Airbus is committed to advancing women in the workplace and developing female talent and is determined to increase the number of women recruited to 25% and the number in senior management positions to 20% by 2020.

On March 9th 2015, Airbus Group launched Balance for Business, the Group’s brand new cross-divisional, cross-departmental and trans-national network to foster gender balance. Involving, in total over 2,000 employees, the network aims to spur the recognition and development of women across the Group by attracting, developing and retaining skilled women.

Airbus in the UK supports the Industrial Cadets scheme that has been inspired by His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales in 2010. Engineering Development Trust is co-ordinating Industrial Cadets on behalf of The Prince of Wales and their role is to work with companies and schools to deliver the programme through a national and regional network.

Industrial Cadets is designed to raise the awareness of local career opportunities in the industrial and manufacturing sectors, develop employability skills and, crucially, raise the aspirations of young students encouraging them to follow careers in engineering. In 2012 Airbus launched the programme for the first time and it has been running at both the Broughton and Filton sites since then every year.

Under the three month scheme the students, aged between 12 and 14 years old, need to develop an environmental project with the help of Airbus mentors and learn more about advanced aeronautical engineering and the high-tech global world of aviation.

Prizes are awarded for teamwork, innovation, best solution and student’s choice and all students graduate as “Industrial Cadets”. Airbus has opted for an all-girls cohort, in particular to encourage more girls to consider the industry for future careers.

Why did Airbus Group join WISE?

"Airbus Group is committed to encouraging women to join our organisation and inspire young girls to pursue careers in aeronautics. Reaching gender balance is a business necessity; we are proud to promote our membership of WISE, and are delighted to showcase our involvement with the WISE Ten Steps programme as one of the initial signatories."
