This is a Principal role within the Energy Engineering team, which will be key in shaping the future development and growth of the consultancy service area. The role requires an energetic and fastidious individual with a passion to shape the UK decentralised energy market and raise the profile of our client in this area. An essential requirement will be to contribute to the delivery of projects and provide technical oversight and quality assurance of deliverables.

As a Principal Engineer you will lead on various design stages of energy generation and efficiency projects, including feasibility, preliminary and detailed design and construction support.
Key areas of the role will also include developing new propositions and providing strategic input into the growth of our team, supporting the development of systems and Intellectual Property and working across the team to support knowledge transfer and education.
As a Principal Electrical Engineer, you will be required to: undertake site electrical infrastructure surveys, tests and reports on existing Electrical systems performance and services installations; perform electrical design, with particular focus on energy efficiency and electrical generation and storage; as well as take responsibility for the technical delivery of outline and detailed electrical (and ICA) design, preparing schedules, drawings and specifications and assisting with project delivery including support for the full project lifecycle, working closely with the projects and contracts team to provide installation and commissioning support. You will also get to work on: production of electrical schematics, preparation of construction drawings, LV/HV distribution system design and Instrumentation and equipment specification, switchgear sizing; achieving appropriate quality standards including technical checking of work, as well as performing peer review and authorisation of colleagues’ work; liaising with electrical supply authorities; acting as the Client’s Engineer or the Client’s Project Manager, to ensure best value is obtained from contractors, advising clients on options, risks and mitigation, as well as operating embedded within the client’s office where required. Finally, you will be performing project management including the co-ordination of technical, commercial and procurement advice from internal and external associates. Delivering projects on time and on budget whilst keeping customers satisfied.
You will need to manage multiple client relationships, liaising with clients to determine their requirements, and assisting clients with on-going enquires; manage relationships in industry bodies such as CIBSE, ADE, BEIS, GLA and the REA; and you will develop strategic partnerships with other companies and institutions that enhance the effectiveness of the work the company delivers.
You will be achieving project profitability by tracking costs, managing and forecasting spend, ensuring that work is kept to budget, managing resources and managing invoicing. You’ll also be providing technical sales support to sales colleagues, ensuring proposals are correctly scoped and priced.
You will support the development of new propositions, identifying market needs and subsequent opportunities, spotting innovations and making the business case for pursuing them. Also, you will be supporting the development of IP and systems that enhance the quality and efficiency of our client work; and with anticipated growth, the role has the potential to develop into leading a team of electrical engineers with line manager responsibilities and responsibility in mentoring less experienced staff.
- A minimum of 5 years’ experience in a similar client-facing role in the energy and wider building services/energy efficiency industry.
- Client and stakeholder management (internal and external), interpersonal and communication skills, managing clients’ expectations, promoting excellent working relationships.
- Experience of working in decentralised energy/district heating.
- Have experience of delivering H&S by design, compliance to CDM regulations, Ex standard, ATEX compliance
Knowledge / Expertise:
- Expertise in generation technologies and renewable or low carbon heat/power sources including PV, batteries, CHP, BMS and controls.
- Able to design the range of building electrical services, particularly power distribution (including cable sizing and protection studies) and lighting systems.
- Knowledge of building services within commercial and public sector operations
Skills / Competencies:
- Strong technical skills including applying engineering first principles.
- Negotiation and persuasion to support Sales colleagues through both account management and successful tender submissions.
- The ability to manage 3rd party contractors
Qualifications / Education:
- Chartered Engineer or to be proactively working towards chartered status with a relevant body
Desirable experience, knowledge, skills, qualifications:
- Instrumentation Control and Automation (ICA) Engineering
- Familiarity with Health Technical Memorandum (HTM)
The role will require you to be willing to travel and visit clients across the UK, as well as including some out-of-hours work, which will all be pre-arranged, to allow work life balance.
