The British Geological Survey (BGS) is one of the world's leading and forward thinking geological science institutes with a focus on both public good science for government and geoscientific research to understand earth and environmental processes. A vacancy has arisen within the Marine Geoscience team for an electrical engineer based at our office in Edinburgh.
The Marine Geoscience Team at BGS is a world-leader in developing and operating under water robotic sea floor drills and other sampling equipment. We are looking for a dynamic electrical engineer who is prepared to work with a small multi-disciplinary team building, maintaining and operating a range of subsea coring devices and geophysical survey equipment on scientific research cruises.
Qualified to HND or degree in a relevant electrical engineering discipline (a high voltage qualification would be desirable, but not essential), you should also have work experience in an engineering environment together with experience in specifying, designing and maintaining electrical control systems. You should also have experience of electrical power transmission systems both single and three phase systems. In addition, you must possess effective communication skills, both oral and written. The post involves team working; therefore you should be able to demonstrate that you can work effectively with others and in a leadership role when necessary.
You will be expected to go to sea for periods up to-60 days at a time.
This is a fixed term role for 2 years in the first instance. Depending on qualifications and experience, starting salary will be £28,200 per annum to £38,254 per annum. For a salary above £35,222 per annum, you will be expected to meet the desirable criteria, which is detailed on www.topcareer.jobs
