  • We are currently seeking a Director of Scientific Operations to lead the delivery of all of our scientific operations and high-throughput platforms to provide invaluable data and resources which are vital for our world-leading science.

    The role will continually evolve services to embrace new technologies and the ever-changing demands of bold new scientific challenges. Driving a committed culture which embraces innovation and collaboration you will provide oversight and direction to a team of 300 people and represent the Institute on a global platform.

    Essential Skills

    • Strong leadership abilities, with the capacity to inspire, energise and empower others to achieve high performance.
    • Skilled influencer and negotiator able to identify and deal tactfully with sensitive and/or contentious situations
    • Experienced and skilled in managing significant change programmes
    • Experience of managing senior managers and a variety of teams/groups
    • Solid experience or working in a complex scientific environment, with the ability to engage senior academic or research peers.
    • An ability to carefully balance the interplay between academic research and corporate operations.
    • Skilled in coaching and mentoring – providers a supportive environment delegating and empowering managers
    • Proven ability to seize scientific opportunities in an agile way.
    • Able to make difficult decisions – utilising a resilient and determined approach.
    • Combines strategic thinking with consideration of operational management.
    • Highly developed interpersonal skills – can identify the requirement for different approaches.
    • Technical understanding of one or more of the Institute’s major pipelines.

  • The Institute is located on the stunning Wellcome Genome Campus. This growing and dynamic site is the British hub of genomic science. It hosts the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI), Open Targets, a Biodata Innovation Centre and host Genomics England Limited’s 100,000 Genomes Sequencing Centre. The Campus is also home to Wellcome Trust Conference Centre and the Wellcome Genome Campus Connecting Science.
