The International Institute for Accelerator Applications at the University of Huddersfield is seeking to appoint a well-qualified Research Assistant to work on the High Luminosity LHC project.

The collimation system of the Large Hadron Collider must be upgraded to handle the planned increase in beam currents. This will require novel collimation techniques, and the effect of these on the beams must be simulated to high precision by validated models.

You will be involved in the development and application of the MERLIN beam transport simulation package for this purpose. You will maintain and support it for other members of the project, adding new features to include novel collimation systems, and applying it to various proposed upgrade scenarios, particularly in matters related to the adaptive collimation system being developed by Huddersfield.

You should have a PhD in Physics, Engineering, or another subject involving large scale computation. You should be a skilled C++ programmer with experienced in the organisation of a large multiple-author software project, preferably under Unix. Familiarity with accelerator or particle physics would be an advantage,

You will be able to demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively with others and write successful publications. It is expected that you will have excellent communication skills, and be able to work positively and enthusiastically, being self-motivated and well organised, with the potential to establish your own successful programme.

Some graduate-level teaching and supervision will be involved.
