Sanna Shabir | Civil / Structural Engineering Technician, Atkins

Sanna Shabir, a Civil / Structural Engineering Technician at Atkins, which is a leading global design, engineering and project management consultancy. Sanna started her career off as an Apprentice where she completed her Advanced Level 3 Apprenticeship in Construction and The Built Environment (Civil Engineering) and is currently continuing her further education at HNC level in Civil Engineering. She has developed both her technical and practical skills over the course of her career and has gained Engineering Technician accreditation with the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) as well as progressing on to higher education in Civil Engineering with an aim of obtaining Chartership status with the ICE.

Over the course of Sanna’s career she has won few national Apprentice of the Year Awards including the Asian Apprentice of the Year Awards. She was the first ever Asian Apprentice of the Year Award winner, not only did she pick up the award for the Engineering and Manufacturing category but she also picked up the award for the overall Apprentice of the Year award. Sanna has earned her position on the judging panel for this year’s Asian Apprentice of the Year 2017 Awards.

Sanna has great enthusiasm and interest in inspiring younger generations into STEM related careers and very keen to share her apprenticeship story to address the UK skills shortage in Engineering. She is an active STEM Ambassador and has presented and organised STEM events both externally and internally to promote apprenticeships and careers in STEM. Sanna is also part of the Panel of Apprentices, which is run by The Institute for Apprenticeships. Her role on the panel involves reporting directly to the Institute Board giving her take on the education and training she has received during her apprenticeship and coming up with ideas and initiatives to improve the apprenticeship experience for those who come after herself.
