Narmeen Rehman - WISE Young Womens Board 2016/17

Narmeen Rehman

Narmeen Rehman - Fuel Route Engineer, EDF Energy

From a young age, I knew that I wanted to be a scientist and contribute to developing something worthwhile for society. I went to a comprehensive school, where unfortunately there was no emphasis on STEM subjects and in fact Chemistry GCSE hadn’t even been scheduled into our timetable. Against all odds, I was determined to pursue Science and I worked hard to overcome obstacles to achieve my goals and would similarly like to inspire others through actively supporting the WISE campaign.

I am fortunate to have a supportive Mum, who encouraged me to pursue my dreams, which led me to eventually read Engineering Science at Oxford University and become a Mechanical Engineer.

At University, I became more interested in sustainability and wanted to contribute to solving the UK energy crisis. This led me to work at EDF Energy, where I have been working for over 4 years. I have had the opportunity to experience work on power stations and also the Engineering technical centre, where I have worked in Structural Integrity and more recently in Fuel Route Systems.

As a member of the WISE Young Women’s Board, I am excited to share my knowledge and personal experience from working as a female Engineer in the nuclear energy industry. I would like to support WISE and help change common misconceptions surrounding STEM careers. I have regularly volunteered for STEM projects and often been the sole female representative. I hope to use my positive attitude to raise awareness of the variety of opportunities and also the satisfaction and fulfilment it can offer.

I feel strongly about empowering women and all young people to pursue their dreams in STEM areas and particularly want to support women in the UK, where I feel that Engineering perhaps has more negative connotations associated with it than elsewhere.
