Juliette Ryan - Content Scientist , Sparx
I am incredibly passionate about STEM subjects and believe that women have a significant role to play in this industry.
I have a first class degree in mathematical sciences from the University of Bath and am now using my degree to create content for an application designed to teach mathematics in secondary schools at Sparx. I believe that passion for STEM is decided at a young age and this is why I have focused my career around exciting young people about the subject.
Having previously worked as a software engineer at IBM, I have been immersed in a predominately male working environment and this highlighted to me the importance of encouraging women to follow a career in STEM.
Alongside my study at university, I ran a project called Bright Ways which provided workshops designed to improve the career prospects of 15 to 19 year olds with severe learning disabilities. I planned, managed and delivered twice weekly sessions to three classes at the City of Bath College as part of their Level 1 diploma. I lead a team of 10, organised training from TeachFirst and chaired weekly meetings to plan sessions. At the end of the course, I organised for each class to sell their products at the University.
I have a strong view that everyone should be excited about STEM subjects. As a board member, I hope to inspire young people to be passionate about STEM and empower women with a career in the sector. From leading Bright Ways, to tutoring and teaching in schools, I have a wealth of experience in working with young people. I am passionate about sharing my experiences and committed to inspiring a future for women in STEM.
