Becky Ford, Trainee Structural Engineer, Shepherd Gilmour, Aged 27
Becky’s first STEM achievement was winning the U14 National Young Engineer in Great Britain. Now she is at the start of a fantastic career learning skills and using her knowledge to design projects that will not only satisfy her explorative character, but also make a difference to her industry. Becky is passionate about sustainability and has delivered round table discussions at the recent National Women in Engineering day to 30 students, drawing on her interest as a youngster building with straw bales, and explaining how sustainable designs can be incorporated in projects. She is currently creating new resources titled ‘A day in the life of a..’ which are fully planned and resourced lessons that provide students with activities similar to those that a professional completes in real life. Becky has continued to create these STEM based materials for secondary schools, whilst completing her BSc (Hons) Civil Engineering part time degree and working for a structural engineering consultant. She is also a STEM and an ICE Ambassador and takes part in regional events such as the Women in Engineering Day at Leeds Beckett University. Becky’s enthusiasm for engineering and the built environment is refreshing and contagious and this is reflected on how young students react positively to her during sessions.
