Kate Cairns, Independent Sustainability Advisor, Cairns Consultancy
Kate’s focus, passion and drive, and her ability to combine her professional expertise with a life-changing personal experience, have made the construction industry recognise the risk posed to cyclists by HGVs. She has worked in the sector for more than 20 years, turning her attention to construction logistic safety after her sister was run down from behind by a tipper truck as she cycled to work. Kate has helped bring the excellent on-site safety culture off-site through her See Me Save Me campaign, and as a pioneering member of the Construction Logistics Cycle Safety (CLOCS) industry group. Success includes changes to EU law; a new UK industry standard; and improved driver training and vehicle design.
Her tireless campaigning has led to changes to EU law, adoption of a national WRRR standard, and the London Mayor’s ‘Safer Lorry Scheme’. CEO of Mace, Mark Reynolds says, "I believe Kate is not only a leader in this important area [construction logistics safety], but also an inspiration for women who wish to pursue a career in science, technology and engineering.”
