Rolls Royce

Our people are our power

12 May 2014

Their pride in what Rolls-Royce has achieved, their commitment to customer excellence, and their vision of what can be achieved in the future – all are fundamental to our continued success.

It’s important to us that we have the best workforce in the business. So we’ve created a diverse and inclusive working environment that attracts and retains the best people, allows flexibility and motivation, and encourages our ongoing success.

Belinda Swain, our Chief Airworthiness Engineer is a perfect example of the talent we look for. Belinda joined us in 1985 after studying Physics at Oxford University and she recently received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the WISE Women of Outstanding Achievement Awards in 2012.

Since joining, she’s carried out a wide range of engineering roles in several disciplines. Early in her career she played a key role within the team that developed the EJ200 engine for the Typhoon fighter jet. From there she went on to become Chief Engineer when the Typhoon went into service with four European Air Forces.

In her current role, Belinda and her team ensure that our processes meet strict airworthiness regulations. She works with European aviation industry bodies such as ASD, as well as airlines to improve Civil Aviation Safety and keep pace with new technology.

As a member of the Rolls-Royce Women's Network, Belinda supports female engineers through one to one discussions in addition to presenting at events for female engineers. She has also supported and organised school careers events to encourage students towards engineering careers.

Speaking about encouraging women to think about science and engineering, Belinda says, "I want more women to realise the amazing breadth of opportunities available through science and engineering. In my career I have had the opportunity to work on some of the world's most advanced technology and I would like to encourage more people to think about the possibilities that science, engineering and technology opens up".

As well as encouraging a wider interest in science and engineering, we’re committed to investing in our people. We develop skills through a range of world-class training programmes. We also offer exceptional benefits, including bonuses, childcare vouchers, employee support assistance and employee discounts.
