Do you want to use your skills to significantly improve the daily lives of scientists and employees across R&D so they can help patients? Want to be part of high performing teams containing world class talent? Do you have a passion for data, elegant simple design and capability development? Then this could be the role for you.
The Data CoE has been in existence for over 2 years with the mission to improve R&D decision making through the better use of its data. The group has concentrated on start-up fundamentals including Infrastructure build, Platform delivery, team set-up and early value delivery through use cases. The focus now is driving implementation so we can maximise the effective use of new tools and the available data by users across all of R&D from those reporting the data, those conducting data discovery through to experts in data and computational science. This will require individuals with leadership qualities, an appreciation of the value of data and the ability to drive the embedding of new ways of working. If think you have what it takes then read on further about this specific opportunity.
What is the Esprit Data R&D Leadership Programme?
The Esprit Programme is GlaxoSmithKline’s leading global talent development programme which builds a pipeline of diverse leaders, with the right capabilities and behaviours to drive GSK’s future strategic challenges. You’ll bring with you a wealth of knowledge and will recognize that there’s still plenty for you to learn and experience so to become an extraordinary leader.
The Esprit Leadership programmes overall goal is to support, stretch, develop and deliver leaders of the future. You will build your breadth of experience and leadership capabilities through accelerated development rotations.
The use of data and analytics across the R&D organization has become a critical imperative in the transformation of our business. GSK's R&D Data Centre of Excellence (CoE) group is leading the path for innovative data management and was recently recognized with the ‘Rookie of the Year' Data Impact Award by Cloudera, Inc. Mark Ramsey, SVP and R&D Chief Data Officer, has been leading the CoE since mid-2015 to bring efficiencies to three areas in R&D including big data platform builds; innovation and incubation; and data science and analytics. So far, they are delivering ground-breaking technology in a single data platform that will give GSK scientists access to data like never before.
"We were not taking full advantage of the vast amount of data generated throughout R&D because it was in silos and difficult to access," said Ramsey. "We essentially collected more than 10 years of biological data regardless of when, how, and where it was generated, then bundled it into a single, central platform. Scientists now have the information at their fingertips and can quickly search data in a couple of clicks."
The vision is for GSK to be at the leading edge in the use of data to drive decisions. There are three entry points into the Esprit Data programme (1) Data Strategy (2) Data usage (3) Statisticians. Applicants should choose the entry point that best fits their qualifications and experience.
How does the Esprit Data Leadership programme work?
There are three entry points into the Esprit Data programme (1) Data Strategy (2) Data Analysis (3) Statisticians. Applicants should choose the entry point that best fits their qualifications and experience.
You will then spend 3 years on a fast track rotational development programme, working your way towards a potential Senior leadership role. Beginning in UK or US, you will have 3 rotations, which may include international experience (not mandatory). Through challenging rotations, you will gain in-depth experience across different areas which could include the Data Centre of Excellence, Real World Data & Analytics and Clinical Statistics.
Whatever it is you’re doing, and wherever you are based, you’ll be contributing to our mission to improve the quality of human life, by enabling people to do more, feel better and live longer – all while fostering strong foundations for a successful career.
Is the Esprit Data Analytics development programme for you?
The use of data and analytics across the R&D organization has become a critical imperative in the transformation of our business. The rapid growth of both internal (GSK-sponsored experiments and human subject research) and external data sources in conjunction with the creation of new modalities has increased the need for GSK to establish improved mechanisms in the collection, integration, primary use and secondary re-use of data.
We are seeking Data Analysts to support our efforts in addressing our most complex problems in drug discovery (genome analytics, safety prediction, target validation, biological networks), clinical development (optimizing trial design, generating background event rates, identifying subgroups with an increased benefit/risk profile) and real world evidence generation (understanding disease natural history and phenotypes, classifying unmet medical needs, evaluating safety and value of medications used in routine practice)observational research areas).
Are you a Talented individual who is eager to lead analytical approaches on a number of R&D challenges using large-scale, distributed systems in traditional and innovative big data environments.
Your qualifications are to include Master’s degree or PhD (Preferred) in mathematics, epidemiology, biostatistics, health informatics, or other data science related discipline.
You will have proven direct experience in the use of analytical tools to develop models with a deep knowledge of data analytics and the deployment of an array of these methods within a diverse environment.
Deep analytical mind-set to establish scalable, efficient, (semi) automated processes for model development, model validation and model implementation and large scale data analysis
Experience of statistical modelling techniques, and use of an array of analytics tools including Python, R, SQL, SAS and visualization tools (machine learning approaches an advantage)
You are happy to act as a change champion & collaborator to support the strategic leadership to broaden the Data Analytics department & wider teams on how as Data Analytics can capitalise on this new pooled data source to ensure fit for purpose, cutting edge analytical tools are in place and can be readily accessed
Proficient at technical writing of project specifications, analytic plans, coupled with excellent oral, written and presentation skills, so to communicate complexed Data Analytical methods simply, across all levels of the organisation.
Understanding of drug development or broader life scientific research to work with discovery, development, computational and platform teams in R&D on designing, building and deploying data analytical approaches for large datasets, including creation of algorithms to extract key information to inform a range of scientific and program decisions; prior exposure to integration and/or analysis of longitudinal patient-level data sets (e.g. electronic healthcare data, cohorts, registries, trials, etc), preferred.
You have a proven ability to influence, communicate and negotiate with all levels of management across functional and business unit boundaries for multiple Data Analytical delivery programs involving complex, interrelated applications and systems designed for today’s big data platforms.
Strong Business Acumen capability so to understand the implications of decisions from a broad business perspective and uses this knowledge to influence decision-making at the highest levels of R&D.
A desire to provide thought-leadership and consultation to the broader R&D organization, including identification of emergent trends and opportunities to advance capabilities of the broader Data analytical and science community at GSK
Provide technical expertise, organizational savvy, and a potential to lead a matrix team focused on complex database research projects with significant impact to GSK.
Ability to work to work as a change agent in a rapidly evolving technologies and many of the world’s leading organizations to analyze and define unique and innovative solutions.
A robust capability in Data Analytics so to act as key influencer with senior internal and external stakeholders so change Data practices to adapt innovative approaches and input to Data development plans
