Find out how WISE members are balancing the work-life needs of returners, and gain insights into the initiatives that are attracting career changers. This afternoon session will include presentations from WISE corporate members on their initiatives for returners and career changers, as well as the opportunity to share ideas and experiences in small groups.

Kindly hosted by Mastercard, this knowledge sharing event is for WISE members only (who are employed at listed Corporate, Education and Institutional members).

The Open University

There is increasing concern about the numbers of women who do not return to STEM following career breaks, exacerbating the low numbers of women in these sectors, and increasing gender disparities in senior roles. It is clear that returning women are faced with numerous hurdles to restarting their careers and that while these are now well recognised, the return journey is not an easy one. In this presentation I will outline findings from my research with STEM women about their career breaks and their experiences of returning to work. In particular I will focus on the factors that have enabled women to make a successful return and will illustrate this with examples from Returning to STEM, our current Open University returners programme. I will also discuss findings from a recent project about the IT sector in India where companies are leading the way in enabling women to continue and resume careers.

Hear from Anouska Ladds about the success of Mastercard’s Relaunch Your Career programme. Focusing on supporting individuals who have taken a break from their career for more than 2 years, Mastercard is investing in bringing motivated and talented individuals back to work, and helping them forge and achieve their current and future ambitions. Anouska will also talk about her own work experiences and her journey, pre, during and post having a family.

Hear from Sky about its awards winning Get Into Tech initiative. Get Into Tech is a free training course offered by Sky for up to 50 women per year. It was launched in March 2016, with the sole objective of providing free specialist training for women (including unemployed single mums and mums returning to work) seeking careers in technology. The programme, which has been designed in partnership with technology training specialists, includes courses in software development, testing and integration, as well as soft skills development and job preparation. Conrad Langworthy will explain more about the programme and some of the results we’ve achieved and Vicki Marshall will talk about her experience of the initiative and how it’s helped her achieve her dream career in Technology.

Tideway have now run three returner programmes since 2015, each one brings with it new learnings and opportunities for improvements. Julie Thornton will share thoughts on implementing returner programmes and things you may want to consider if you are thinking of introducing a programme for the first time.
