Hints on training mentors

Training mentors will help them understand the process and benefits of mentoring, and the roles they can play to effectively support their mentee.

In a formal one-to-one mentoring programme, it is useful to cover certain topics as a minimum.

1

Why female apprentices benefit from mentoring

3

The roles of a mentor

4

The mentoring process

5

Mentoring skills including communication, listening, building rapport and objective setting

6

Practical exercises throughout the session

7

The need for confidentiality and boundary setting

8

A mentoring agreement between mentor and mentee

9

How the mentor will be supported throughout the programme

10

You can also encourage mentors to informally network with each other, to share their experiences of mentoring throughout their mentoring relationships.
