Supporting apprentices through their transition

In an industry that has been traditionally dominated by men, particularly in operational roles, both attracting and retaining women in such roles is a challenge for the business. However, as well as the increase in applications from women for apprenticeship roles, we also have a high retention rate of women who come and work at Welsh Water.


What we did.

Providing there has been positive performance and they have competed their qualifications, the apprentices are guaranteed a role at the end of the programme. The talent development team support the apprentices throughout all stages of the process, offering advice and information on the options open to them throughout their time on the apprenticeship. Their programme and qualifications are for three years, with the fourth year supporting with the transition to their new position and supporting them in gaining confidence in what they do. We also offer a competitive remunerations and benefits package for our apprentices to make sure they are motivated and supported throughout their training.


What we learned.

Our latest figures show that 100% of women apprentices who have completed the programme remain with the company.

In addition to their substantive posts, our apprentices have taken on extra responsibilities within their area which include:

  • Employee Engagement Champion – following our annual survey, they deliver results to their team and work with line managers to put in place local action plans to look at improvements.
  • STEP (Safety Takes Every Person) Champions – to support our behavioural safety culture, the champions deliver training and tool box talks to help us embed a safety culture.
