Mitigating bias in the workplace

This engaging and thought-provoking session explores how bias shapes workplace experiences and opportunities, with a specific focus on its impact on women in STEM.

Participants will learn how even subtle and often unintentional behaviours and decisions can reinforce discrimination and unfair treatment, and what can be done to create a more inclusive and supportive work environment.

The session combines insights from research, real-world case studies, and interactive discussions to raise awareness and drive meaningful change, and it is suitable for employees at all levels, including leadership and HR professionals, who are committed to fostering equity and inclusion in the workplace.

Session overview

Awareness

In the first section, participants will be presented with the information necessary to understand what bias is and its relation to privilege and stereotypes. They will also be introduced to the ways bias can influence and manifest in our everyday workplace interactions through real-life examples and case studies.

Impact and consequences

Using self-reflection activities and guided group discussions, here we will explore more thoroughly how in STEM workplaces, where collaboration and innovation are crucial, bias can shape team dynamics, communication, and opportunities in ways that disadvantage women (and other underrepresented groups).

Recognising these patterns and the various types of bias is the first step towards dismantling them.

Strategies and tools for action

Creating change requires more than awareness; it requires action.

In the final part of the session, participants will learn practical tools and strategies to identify and interrupt bias in real-time, as well as approaches to achieve a more inclusive culture and become active allies - using their influence to advocate for equity and inclusion across all areas of the workplace.
