Teachers & Careers Advisors

This section aims to try and help teachers and careers advisors with ideas for lessons, careers, interesting information and courses/publications which could all help to demonstrate that a career in science, engineering or construction can be very interesting and not involve the usual stereotypes.

Courses

WISE Outlook

The WISE Outlook programme is a three-day programme run at local colleges, enabling Year 9 girls (age 13/14) to experience engineering first-hand.

The girls take part in hands-on engineering projects, designing and making something for themselves, work in teams to develop presentational skills, talk to women students and staff from technical colleges and meet women engineers to talk about their work and careers.

For more information on how the WISE Outlook Programme can apply to you, please go to the WISE Outlook section of the website. This can be accessed from the home page.

Insight

Insight is a course for young women studying in the sixth form or on Scottish Highers who are interested in becoming an engineer. Successful applicants will spend a week at university, staying in student accommodation and meeting others with similar interests. They will have the opportunity to find out about different fields of engineering, spend a day with an engineering company and meet other women who have studied and are making successful careers in engineering.

The idea is that these young women would then have the opportunity to have fun and discover university life at the same time as providing more information and experience of engineering, problem solving and teamwork.

Courses are available at eight universities across Britain with the opportunity for some applicants being selected to attend a course in Finland. Costs do not exceed £50 for UK courses and £100 for Finland.
