Global Entrepreneurship Week: new statistics on women in science, engineering and entrepreneurship
To mark Global Entrepreneurship Week (15 – 21 November 2010) the UKRC has released statistics on the numbers of women in science, engineering, technology and the built environment who are active as entrepreneurs.
These show that only a quarter of all UK entrepreneurs are female and women represent just seven per cent of all science, engineering and technology (SET) entrepreneurs.
At a time when science and engineering are key to driving forward our economy, talented, SET-qualified women have the potential to make a major contribution through innovation and entrepreneurship The UKRC is the lead organisation working to advance gender equality in these sectors. It is working to ensure that initiatives such as Global Entrepreneurship Week draw attention to the achievements of women from SET backgrounds and inspire more to think entrepreneurially. The UKRC also offers a range of services for employers, entrepreneurs and women considering self employment.
“This is a week of celebration, and at the UKRC we are proud to profile and applaud inspiring women scientists, engineers and technologists who are inventors and entrepreneurs,” said UKRC Director Annette Williams.
“Their contribution is important. Entrepreneurship is key to innovation and economic development and, within this, science, engineering and technology play a major role. But we are aware of the challenges women face. We want to encourage the government and others to take steps to facilitate women’s entrepreneurship in the SET sectors, so their talents can be channelled into the development of new products and services and job creation.”
She added: “We know that many women leave their careers in SET because employment policies and practices are not conducive to a good work-life balance. We hope that more of these women can be encouraged to use their specialist knowledge in entrepreneurship and self employment.”
